Hive (The Vault #1)

Author(s): A. J. Betts

Young Adult Fiction

All I can tell you is what I remember, in the words that I have.

Hayley tends to her bees and follows the rules in the only world she has ever known. Until she witnesses the impossible: a drip from the ceiling. A drip? It doesn't make sense. Yet she hears it, catches it. Tastes it. Curiosity is a hook.

What starts as a drip leads to a lie, a death, a boy, a beast, and too many awful questions.

Hive is the first in a gripping two-book series by award-winning and international bestselling author A. J. Betts.

When bee-keeper Hayley discovers a salty tasting drip on the ceiling of her community's empty service house, which no one is supposed to enter, she is puzzled. The same day an elder dies when one of the bees that Hayley is responsible for stings him and the authorities want to hush it up. Hayley has never questioned her strict community's rules before, thinking there were no secrets and that everyone is living in peaceful harmony. But now that cracks are appearing, she is determined to find some answers.

A dystopian novel for age 13+, Hive has been likened to Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. There are some similarities although Hive is not as grim!

Betts builds a seemingly idyllic new world in the first of her two-book series. But disturbing undertones emerge as Hayley  tries to get to the truth and her life is in danger.

Betts is the author of the award-winning Zac & Mia,  which has been made into a TV series, released in the US in 2017.
