Politics for Beginners

Author(s): Various

Social Sciences

Learn about different types of government (democracy, monarchy, dictatorship), about how laws are made, but also about how politics has an impact into every day life (who pays for schools and hospitals for example). Become a citizen and understand why adults fight a lot every four years thanks to this book which uses infographics and snippets of information to make non-fiction fun!

Lucy's Review:

"Politics is boring."
"Yeah, we don't care about politics."

Is this your kids? Or is this you? In this graphic novel style primer, Usborne has made an excellent job of explaining the fundamentals and even making it fun! Cute little cartoons and infographics race you through what is often presented as a pretty boring topic.

Unlike most books of this type, Politics for Beginners doesn't focus on either the US or the UK systems but has a more international outlook. It covers systems of government, elections, the law, revolutions, and has a great section on how to argue. I didn't always agree with its definitions and occasional lack of argument for certain ideologies but it's a great place to start.

From the basis of politics as different ways we make decisions in groups to discussions about war, immigration and feminism, this is a book for everyone - big and small. Probably aimed at 8 -12 year olds, it can definitely be read either side of that... even 6-year-olds love it!
