Description

A small dark brown native owl with beige and brown mottled front and typically large owl eyes. It is nocturnal, eating a variety of insects and small animals, such as rats, mice and smaller birds. Ruru has a variety of calls but derives its common name from the iconic call that sounds like "more-pork". Ruru is hard to spot because it is nocturnal, hidden in forested areas and is eerily silent in flight!
