Ruth's Review:
Sean, 14, has emigrated to New Zealand with his mum after his father died and he’s lonely and homesick for their old Zimbabwe farm. But life becomes much more exciting when he meets mad-keen spearo Mason, who introduces him to spearfishing. Sean is super keen to learn, but first must overcome his fear of sharks, learn to control his breathing and find the money to buy dive gear. He also needs to reassure Mum that he’s not in any real danger. Sean has a good-sized chip on his shoulder, especially after a run-in with Mason’s grumpy sister Nicole, and bad feelings come to a head when the pair dive together in a spearfishing competition. Scott, who wrote the fantastic hunting adventure, Sticking With Pigs, absolutely nails the technical aspects of the sport, along with the thrill of exploring under the sea. Another exhilarating, fast-paced read for ages 11 to 15.
