Into the Wild (#1 Wolf Girl)

Author(s): Anh Do

Middle Fiction

A wildly exciting new adventure series from bestselling author Anh Do. I crawled onto the bank and collapsed, exhausted. From the dirt, I looked up in amazement at four dogs staring down at me. Was I dreaming? Had I gone mad? It all seemed very real. 'You guys saved me!' I said, as I sat up in my dripping clothes. 'I owe you.'

When disaster separates Gwen from her family, she must fend for herself, all alone in the wilderness.  Luckily, she's not alone for long… When a wolf puppy, a Labrador, a Chihuahua, and a greyhound want to make friends, Gwen discovers talents she didn't know she possessed.  It will take all her new skills and strength just to survive. Does Gwen have what it takes to be leader of the pack?

Jem's Review:

Afterwards, Dad had said to me, “Gwen, sweetheart, you need to trust your instincts more…”

Gwen is shaken awake by her mother. In a rush, the family - mum, dad and her big sister - pile suitcases into the car and join the hundreds of other vehicles and families escaping on the packed roads. But as they head to their destination - a bomb drops. Everyone flies out of their cars, racing down the side of a hill, towards a forest. With her parents urging her to run ahead, Gwen sprints to safety as more explosions are set off. She falls, smacking her head.

When Gwen comes to, everyone is gone. Surrounded by smoke and charred ground, she heads into the forest seeking shelter and searching for her family. There she meets a wolf pup who urges her deeper into the forest. They team up with a rag tag group of dogs - a greyhound, a chihuahua, a lovable labrador, and a staunch rottweiler. They learn to survive in the harsh environment, learning to hunt, and work together to keep each other safe.

Wolf Girl is the first in a new series by Anh Do and is a departure from his other books. There is still his humour and charm, but Wolf Girl is a story of survival and war and is aimed at a more mature reader. Gwen is a great character, with a clear voice, and is super resourceful. The illustrations are filled with character and each member of Gwen’s pack is unique and valued. Ending on a cliff-hanger, this series is going to be exciting!

The plot is quick and filled with adventure and suspense, and could be a great option for reluctant readers aged 9+.
