The Quest Diaries of Max Crack

Author(s): Jules Faber

Junior Fiction

Max Crack is new in Piddown. He decides that a new town means a new beginning and resolves to embark on a series of quests, such as: * Make a new best friend * Win a trophy * Solve a mystery * Find hidden treasure. He meets Frankie on his first day in town (Quest No. 1: tick). Now all he has to do is win a trophy, solve a mystery and find hidden treasure...

The story is presented as Max's diary, and it's a visual feast: full of speech bubbles, doodles, asides, highlighted words, and crossed-out words. It's a stream of visual and verbal consciousness and captures the intriguingly chaotic mind of an 11-year-old perfectly.

Ruth's Review:

Max Crack has just moved to Piddown and has written down a list of quests he wants to achieve. He figures that as no one knows him here, they won’t have any idea of all the embarrassing things from his past, such as farting on the cat and losing his pants when he fell in the creek at camp.

Number 1 on the list is to make a best friend and he does that on his first day out exploring when he nearly drowns in the flooded ditch behind his house. Not a great start to his new life, but his saviour Frankie comes from a huge family and knows all about embarrassing things.

Max and Frankie bond over peanut and honey sandwiches, spelling bees, building a raft and making comics for the school fair. But Max also wants to complete his fourth and fifth quests – solving a mystery and getting his picture in the paper. So when the boys find some abandoned number plates that were used in a bank robbery, it looks like Max might get his wish.

Written in diary and comic form with lined pages and plenty of illustrations, Max’s first adventure is a fun read for age 9+ and especially for those who love the WeirDo and Treehouse series.
