Local Description

E. Lockhart writes thrilling and complex novels about obsessive and damaged liars. There was the award-winning We Were Liars, about four teenagers whose friendship turns destructive. In Genuine Fraud, the main characters are Imogen, an heiress, impulsive and tired of being perfect, and Jule, a fighter, a chameleon and a liar, who yearns for a better life. Both are not particularly likeable young women, who have plenty of flaws, another Lockhart trademark.
Starting in the present time, Immie's and Jule's intense friendship takes a dark turn as the story is revealed in flashbacks, each chapter going back a few weeks. With plenty of twists and tension, the story is very similar to The Talented Mr Ripley. Lockhart acknowledges she was influenced by Patricia Highsmith's novel, as well as by Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. I can't say more without spoiling the plot, but I was mesmerised by this dark and edgy thriller for age 15 plus.
