Ban This Book

Author(s): Alan Gratz

Middle Fiction

An inspiring tale of a fourth-grader who fights back when her favorite book is banned from the school library-by starting her own illegal locker library. It all started the day Amy Anne Ollinger tried to check out her favorite book in the whole world, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, from the school library. That's when Mrs. Jones, the librarian, told her the bad news: her favorite book was banned, all because a classmate's mom thought the book wasn't appropriate for kids to read. Amy Anne decides to fight back by starting a secret banned books library out of her locker. Soon, she finds herself on the front line of an unexpected battle over book banning, censorship, and who has the right to decide what she and her fellow students can read. Reminiscent of the classic novel Frindle by Andrew Clements for its inspiring message, Alan Gratz's Ban This Book is a love letter to the written word and its power to give kids a voice.

One man's junk was another man's treasure as my grandmother said. The same thing was true with books. One person's Captain Underpants was another person's From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.

When Amy Anne Ollinger finds out that her favourite book, From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, has been deemed "inappropriate" by a group of parents (led by one delightfully overbearing mother) and banned from the school library, she and friends start the BBLL - the Banned Books Locker Library. As more and more books are banned, including all of Captain Underpants, and the waiting lists for the books in the BBLL grow longer, likelihood of discovery grows as well...

Stuffed full of references to other books, and even a Dav Pilkey cameo (whose books are banned), Ban this Book will leave you with a huge list of other books to read. It's also a great book for discussing censorship and would make an excellent class read for Year 5 up.

A fantastic book about finding your voice and standing up for what you believe in, featuring mostly black characters and a realistic family dynamic. Highly recommended for 9+
